The True Meaning of Friendship...and the Joy it can bring to Everyone!

I LOVE a good heart-warming story...especially one that shows the good in people. This story pulled at my heart-strings and I wanted to share and preserve it. It is a story about Homecoming Court in a little Texas town. There are many stories out there about how horrid some teens can be, but I know there are so many great teens out there. Our ward and stake has a good number of them. Anywhooooo...here's the story of Kristin and her Court.
Never has the selection of a homecoming queen sent so many tears falling so freely.
Kristin Pass, an 18-year-old senior with Down syndrome, became Aledo High School's homecoming queen Friday to a joyous standing ovation and the flutter of a thousand tissues on a remarkable night for an amazing young woman.
Her grandfather, Dr. David Campbell of Corsicana, escorted her onto the field and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek as Kristin joined eight other young women in the Homecoming Court to await the results of the vote, cast by the 360-plus members of Aledo High's senior class.

Then came the announcement ... and pandemonium.
"Oh my gosh! I was sitting in the student section and everyone stood up, crying and cheering for Kristin," said longtime friend and fellow senior Meaghan Geary, 17, who first met Kristin in the third grade. "It was great!"
Carolyn Pass stood at the edge of the football field, taking pictures of her daughter and friends' daughters in the court, when the stadium erupted.
"It's just something you can't even imagine," she said. "And afterward, everyone was just running down to her, congratulating her. And the other girls in the court, they're all just beautiful girls, inside and out."
Ms. Pass said she spoke later with a friend. "She said the only mistake anyone made was not handing out crying towels."
The vote may have been a surprise, but no one who knows Kristin doubts her popularity, her mother said.
"Kristin has a lot of friends – she likes everyone. It doesn't matter if you're tall or short, pretty, not pretty, smart, not smart – she likes everybody. She has great friends. And Aledo is a great community."
"She's just the neatest kid in the whole wide world," added her aunt, Chari Hust of Houston, "and everybody sees that."
Clay Gilmer, who works in the stadium press box, running the scoreboard and clock, said people pushed toward the windows as the young women were introduced.
"They were all pulling for Kristin," Mr. Gilmer said.
When she won, he was thrilled. "This has been such a special time, a special week for Kristin," he said. "And I was really taken by the maturity and the love shown by her friends, her peers, her classmates.
"That makes this a double blessing."
Kristin pronounced the evening "exciting" and "awesome."
She was so thrilled, her mother said, that she took her crown to bed with her.
"She's real proud of it," her friend Meaghan added.
Kristin and her family, including sister Kendall, now a freshman, moved to Aledo when Kristin was in the third grade. She was embraced by the people in town through good times and bad, including the death of her dad, J.T., two years ago.
"We've always had great experiences here," her mom said. "We've been blessed, and I think Kristin brings a lot of blessings to the people she knows."
Her selection as homecoming queen was a wonderful surprise. But Meaghan seemed to have an inkling that it could happen.
"Everyone loves Kristin," she said, "and I didn't know for sure, but in class everyone was like, 'Who are you voting for?' and everybody was like, 'Vote for Kristin, she's so good.' "
Kristin doesn't care what's on the outside, Meaghan said. She's friends with everyone, and everyone admires that.
"She's the person we all want to be," Meaghan said.

General Conference Trip

The Priest Quorum from our ward to a trip to Utah to attend the Priesthood Session of General Conference. They left for the long road trip after school on Thursday. They were hoping to eat at a Vegas buffet...but arrived to late. In n Out became the eating spot. They headed off to Saint George to spend the night. Early Friday they were off to Provo. They arrived in Park City in the afternoon to spend some quality time with the Alpine slides. However, after one trip down it started raining. They did get a trip down the Zip line too. So, they headed off to Salt Lake to the condo and get ready to see the Joseph Smith movie. Jordon said the movie was "All Good!"

Saturday morning the went to do the hike to the Timpanogos Caves. Do you see my boy, the one freezing with the tank top on. Doh! After the hike they headed off to BYU to see the campus and buy some BYU gear!

Priesthood session was next on the agenda. They were lucky not to have to wait forever to get into the Conference Center. Jordon said he was grateful to be able to hear the Prophet speak in person. He enjoyed his talk about being a good home teacher. After conference, they went out for a special dinner at a Brazilian churrascaria, (steak house). It was a great bonding opportunity for our priest quorum.

Non-partisan Political Joke

While walking down the street one day a US senator is tragically hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

'Welcome to heaven,' says St. Peter. 'Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you.' 'No problem, just let me in,' says the man. 'Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.'

'Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,' says the senator. 'I'm sorry, but we have our rules.'

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne. Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly & nice guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises... The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him. 'Now it's time to visit heaven.' So, 24 hours pass with the senator joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing.

They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns. 'Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity.' The senator reflects for a minute, then he answers: 'Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.'

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above. The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. 'I don't understand,' stammers the senator. 'Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?'

The devil looks at him, smiles and says, 'Yesterday we were campaigning....

Today you voted.'

Happy Birthday Mom!

Happy Birthday Mom!
My Mom is a true Artist. She can look at anything and make it, even better than the original. Her creativity is amazing. She's a great friend, mom and the best Grandma. She's thoughtful and giving! Our neighbors always said, "Pam makes the best whole cracker meatloaf!" My mom learned to read and write Spanish, fluently in her adult years. My mom hates the water, but loves to travel.
We are looking forward to their visit this week. The kids can't wait to do all those crafts she always bring.
Happy Birthday....luv ya!

She's an Awesome athlete(even if the stupid high school soccer coach can't see it.) She did fabulous on her first day of wake boarding and snowboarding.

She's gifted musically and a beautiful artist. She has a wonderful testimony and an affinity for obedience. Thanks for the love and the laughter, I love ya Babe!

General Conference

This morning watching President Monson speak during conference was so heart warming. I love this man. I love his talks, I love his stories, I love his laugh, I love the love I see in his gentle eyes, I love his quirky smile. Just seeing and hearing him brings peace and joy to my soul.

President Eyring has always been a favorite speaker in our home. A few months before he was called to be an apostle, we had a wonderful opportunity to hear him speak. Once a month we could go hear a different speaker at our stake in Moreno Valley. It was rumored that month a General Authority was coming, maybe one of the Twelve. When we got to the church we were told it was one of the Seventy. We were a little disappointed, until we heard him speak. He was AMAZING! So kind and gentle, funny and full of whit. There were only maybe 50-60 people there. Afterwards, we all got to go up and talk with him and shake is hand. A few month later in the April conference they called Henry B. Eyring to be an Apostle of the Lord. We laughed, we really did get to hear one of the Apostles that night!

I like Presidents Uchtdorf's stories too. I love his accent. I look forward to being able to hear him for many years to come. Sister Dalton's talk about focusing on the Temple for the Young Women was excellent...everything leads to the Temple. As a parent it is one of my greatest desires to be able to sit in the Celestial Room with all my children.

I am grateful for a Prophet that leads and guides this church. The Documentary on President Monson was superb today. I love that HE asked us to pray for him. It is something that we do in all our family prayers, it just great to know he really does want and love that we do that for him.
