On this day we remember those that have sacrificed their lives for our country. We appreciate those that serve and the families they leave behind. It is not a small thing they do, give up sharing those little everyday moments with their loved ones. Thank you!
Leonard knows a little bit about those times. He served on the USS Missouri BB63 from 1985-1989. But, for him it was an adventure because he was just a young single guy. He did not have to leave a wife and kids behind to do his tours. He saw the world and learned many life lessons. Some of the places he traveled; Victoria Canada, Hawaii, Australia, Egypt, Diego Garcia, Panama Canal, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Philippines and Turkey. He says his favorite places were, Victoria Canada and Australia. Beautiful Countries and nice people.
We met in March of 1989 while he was stationed in Long Beach. He received an Honorable Discharge in July 1989, after 4 years of service. Most of his service was during peace times. He did see a little action in the Persian Gulf(before the war). We hope to travel with the kids to Hawaii one day where the USS Missouri is at rest. He would love to show the kids where he spent four years of his life.
The Mighty Mo was re-commissioned under President Ronald Regan in 1985. He had 4 of the Iowa Class Battleships brought back. The Mighty Mo has a bit of history on her. It is where the Japanese signed their surrender in World War II.
She has 9 sixteen inches guns! Leonard has spent many nights in those gun turrets. She has a beautiful Teak-wood deck. They clean those decks with a process called Holy-Stoning!
